IMUs - Inertial Measurement Units
Inertial Measurement Units are devices that contain sensors on three axes that provide speed / acceleration and attitude information, including heading, pitch, and roll angles. IMUs operate in a very similar way to AHRS systems, however AHRS have an accurate gyrocompass integrated.
IMUs are suitable for any maritime operation that requires attitude determination and motion compensation. Nowadays, there are a huge range of motion sensors that provide high accuracy motion measurements in all dynamic environments. They cover all marine activities, from small hydrographic vessels to large vessels and installations.
IMUs are built with FOG or RLG gyroscopes and accelerometers to provide real time motion measurements with high dynamic accuracy. Furthermore, their design, construction, and assembly guarantee extremely high reliability in the most demanding marine environments.
Inertial Measurement Units are devices containing several sensors for motion sensing in (unmanned) vehicles. A combination of Accelerometers, Gyroscopes and sometimes Magnetometers output data for 3D-orientation. IMUs are often integrated into larger systems which control or capture the vehicles measurements.
