Modem M16

Miniature low power acoustic modem

Water Linked engineered the M16 modem, a compact underwater acoustic modem that can transmit 16 bits per second. The modem is designed to operate in the most challenging environments, where a reliable and stable connection is paramount. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology initially developed for Aquaculture, Water Linked created a modem that delivers a robust half duplex communication link with an acoustic range of 500m.

Description

The M16 modem is highly suitable for deployment with subsea vehicles or instrumentation that possess limited power resources due to its rapid boot-up time of under 10 milliseconds. Moreover, when transmitting and receiving data, the M16 modem remains a low-power solution, consuming less than 2 watt seconds.

With 12 channels operating at a centre frequency of approximately 58 kHz, multiple modems can operate simultaneously in the same area without interference. The M16 modem's compact and lightweight design was critical in enabling seamless OEM integration with minimal impact on the system's overall layout.

Additionally, the M16 modem features a transparent UART interface that facilitates easy low-power connectivity to sensors, while an extended cable variant of the modem is available that supports RS485 communication.
