MS-2000 "AGRI detector"

The Medusa Radiometrics MS-2000-CsI-MTS product line of radiation detection systems comprises a line of low-power, lightweight and robust gamma-ray sensors developed with vehicle-borne mapping applications in mind. The housing is ultra-rugged made of kevlar strengthened Carbonfibre and has extra-rugged end-caps. The system can be mounted on all kinds of vehicles, tractors, quads or cars.

Description

System Operation

The system is designed for minimum operator interaction. It provides various views on the data streams while being acquired, allowing for online system checks. The system has an embedded data storage of 4GB which is expandable to a maximum capacity of 32GB, yielding space for over 4000 hours of continuous logging of data. The system can be user-configured to output gamma-ray spectra continuously, allowing to connect the sensor to multiple data acquisition systems.

Technology

The system comprises a 90x310mm (2L) CsI-based scintillation detector connected to a tailor-made spectrum processing unit. This unit comprises a stack of PCBs containing an HV supply for the detector, 2048-channel MCA and a power/data processing/storage board. The system is powered by a 9-36V, 6W power supply. Communication runs over TCP-IP (ethernet) or serial connection.

The unit runs a dedicated web server that provides access to the multiple functions of the device, i.e.

  • Set-up of the system;
  • Status view to inspect data and functioning of the system;
  • Single and continuous measurement modes;
  • Download view to allow retrieval of recorded data.

This web server can be accessed via any standard web browser platform.

The system can be integrated into modern DAS systems, like the Geoduster DAS. This way, spectrometer data can continuously be logged and combined with other sensors like GPS and elevation meters. The systems can also be equipped with a Medusa PUCK - a small add-on box containing a GPS, temperature and pressure sensors and optionally a battery pack to power the system. The puck acts as a WIFI access point allowing it to operate the MS-2000 wirelessly from any WIFI-enabled device.

The data is stored in records containing energy-stabilized gamma-ray spectra, together with count rate and activities of 40K, 238U, 232Th and 137Cs. Other radionuclides can be added on request.
